This past week we explored ways to test for the existence of different characteristics of life in unknown substances. You and your group will be given one characteristic:
  • Cells
  • Organization
  • Growth and Development
  • Reproduction (heredity)
  • Use of Energy
  • Response to Stimuli (maintains of homeostasis)
  • Adaptation to other organisms and their environment (evolution)

You have to define the characteristic, write a protocol that could test that characteristic and test it. You and your group are responsible for reporting this information and the RAW data (just the information -- not in charts or graph form-- they will have to do that themselves) to the rest of the class on this wiki page.

Once everyone is finished with their experiments each group will be responsible for creating a poster which will summarize the problem, background, methods (protocols) and data and come up with a conclusion stating which of the unknown samples are living and which are not AND WHY. You will have to present this poster to the class.

You have until Friday October 1st to complete the experiment, gather the data and report it. You have until Friday October 8th to prepare and hand-in your poster.

Your grade will be determined as a group and will be calculated using the rubrics that we given to you in class.
